As you know Mt. Shasta City sits at the base of a 14,179’ Cascade volcano. Mt. Shasta is within an hours drive to 5 wilderness areas and 1 state park. (Trinity Alps, Marble Mountains, Siskiyou, Castle Crags, and Mt. Shasta wilderness areas and Castle Crags State Park). This location offers endless miles of trails, perfect for mountain biking, trail running, hiking and backpacking. There are also many pristine mountain lakes for you to enjoy and escape the crowds!
Just outside of Mt. Shasta City is the beautiful Castle Lake which is a great place to visit in the summer for swimming, kayaking and hiking, and in the winter for backcountry skiing, snowshowing, ice skating and sledding.
Just beyond that you enter the Klamath Trinity divide offering access to the Pacific Crest Trail (access also available outside of McCloud and Castle Crags St. Park) Mount Eddy and the Sission-Callahan trail. This alone would be enough to be an outdoor enthusiast's dream. Outside of McCloud offers miles of trails along the scenic McCloud River offering swimming fishing and 3 of the most beautiful waterfalls in the State. Dunsmuir offers short trails leading to 2 very beautiful waterfalls as well as access to the Sacramento River. The Mountain itself offers endless vistas and everything from short little nature walks to summiting the mighty mountain.
For more recreation there is Lake Siskiyou offering beach access with rental of Paddle Boards, Kayaks, pedal boats, party boats etc. a boat ramp. There's also over 13 miles of trails that circumference the lakes edge, perfect for running or walks with the dogs and access to countless swimming holes.
Lake McCloud offers more for boating with boat ramp allowing water skiing and jet skiing.
The Mount Shasta Avalanche Center is the best source for anyone looking to climb the mountain or spend any time in the region's backcountry.
The Mt. Shasta Ski Park has numerous lifts and slopes to enjoy without the high prices and crowds of other popular ski areas. Offering both advanced downhill skiing and lessons and gentle slopes for beginners, the Ski Parks is fun for all ages and levels of skiers/snowboarders!
Mt. Shasta Nordic Center has miles of groomed cross country ski routes, plus offers rentals and lessons and is an outdoor paradise for skiers, snowshoers and more.
Mt. Shasta has two city parks one with an Ice skating rink and skate park and a free summer concert series. Visit Mount Shasta is a great resource for all local community events.
South Siskiyou County is home to several fantastic golf courses. Two of which are full 18 hole resorts (Mt. Shasta Resort and Lake Shastina) and local 9 hole courses in McCloud and Weed.
